Behind the Scenes: How Your Image Becomes a Print
You upload a photograph, select a material and size, place an order. A few days later, a beautifully crafted print arrives at your door. But what happens in between? What transforms a digital file into a physical object you'll live with for decades?
At JustPix, this process is meticulous. Every step is designed to preserve your image quality, ensure color accuracy, and deliver a print that matches or exceeds your expectations. From the moment your file enters our production facility to the moment it ships from our North American fulfillment center, careful attention guides the journey.
This behind-the-scenes look shows you exactly what goes into JustPix prints. You'll understand why we're confident delivering prints that last, why quality matters at every step, and why local North American production makes a measurable difference.
Step 1: Receiving and File Assessment (Day 1)
Your journey begins when your file and order arrive at our JustPix production facility.
File Reception and Security
The moment your order comes in, it's assigned a unique job number and logged into our production management system. Your file is securely stored and backed up immediately. We take data security seriously—your images are treated as the precious items they are.
Technical File Assessment
Our production team reviews every file for technical specifications:
- Resolution check: Is the file high enough resolution for your chosen print size? (We recommend minimum 100 DPI, preferably 150 DPI for optimal quality)
- Color profile analysis: What color space is the file in (sRGB, Adobe RGB, CMYK)? This affects how we process it for accurate color printing
- Format verification: Is the file in an acceptable format (JPEG, TIFF, PNG) without corruption?
- Size and orientation: Does the file match your requested print dimensions?
If any technical issues are detected, our production team reaches out immediately. We want to catch and fix problems before they reach the printing stage, not after.
Creative Review
For prints from our Artist Marketplace or curated collections, our creative team reviews the image for aesthetic quality and composition. Custom uploads pass this stage automatically—we assume you're happy with your choice.
Step 2: Color Management and Calibration (Day 1-2)
Color management is where good prints become great prints. This is the process that ensures the colors in your image translate accurately to the physical print.
Understanding the Challenge
Your screen displays color using light (RGB—red, green, blue). Your print displays color using ink on a physical surface. These are fundamentally different technologies. A color that looks perfect on your screen might print completely differently without proper color management.
Additionally, different materials (canvas, acrylic, photo paper) absorb and reflect color differently. A rich blue on canvas might appear slightly different on acrylic. Professional color management accounts for these differences.
Color Profile Conversion
When your image arrives, we analyze its current color profile and convert it to a print-optimized profile specific to your chosen material and finish.
For Canvas Prints:
- We convert to an optimized CMYK profile that accounts for canvas's ink absorption and the matte finish's light-scattering properties
- Saturation is adjusted slightly upward to compensate for canvas's natural softening of color intensity
- Blacks are enhanced to be truly deep, not muddy
For Acrylic Prints:
- We convert to a profile that takes advantage of acrylic's light-transmitting properties
- Colors are often enhanced slightly more than canvas, because acrylic's glossy surface and transparency naturally amplify saturation
- We ensure blacks are pure and true, not blocked or crushed
For Photo Prints:
- We use specialized profiles for premium archival photo papers
- Different paper types (gloss, matte, lustre) receive different profile adjustments
- Skin tones receive special attention to ensure natural, flattering color
Proof Generation and Customer Review
Once color management is complete, we generate a soft proof (digital representation) and a physical proof if requested. This is your opportunity to review how your image will look before we commit to full production.
You receive the proof and can request adjustments:
- "The reds are too saturated, please dial them back 10%"
- "The skin tones look too yellow, can you cool them slightly?"
- "The blacks could be deeper"
Our color team makes these adjustments and resubmits. Revisions continue until you're satisfied. This back-and-forth is part of our commitment to accuracy.
Approval and Locking
Once you approve the proof, we lock the color settings. The approved profile is used for your specific print and archived for your future reference. If you ever order a reprint, we'll use the identical color settings, ensuring consistency.
Step 3: File Preparation and RIP (Day 2)
RIP stands for "Raster Image Processing." This is where the digital magic happens—transforming your high-quality image file into instructions the printer understands.
Creating the Print Map
The RIP software takes your color-managed image and creates a detailed map of exactly where every ink droplet will land. For high-resolution printing, this involves calculating ink placement at the pixel level.
Think of it as a blueprint: "At this location, place 8 cyan ink droplets and 12 magenta droplets" repeated millions of times across the entire print.
Optimization Algorithms
The RIP software applies sophisticated algorithms to optimize ink usage:
- Color separation: Breaking down colors into component inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and specialty colors)
- Halftoning: Creating the illusion of continuous tone using patterns of tiny dots
- Dithering: Distributing ink to maximize color accuracy and minimize visible patterns
- Linearization: Ensuring consistent ink density across the print area
This is where the quality difference becomes apparent. Low-quality printers skip these optimizations. JustPix's professional RIP software applies every optimization, resulting in visibly superior prints.
Output File Generation
The RIP produces a print-ready file that contains all instructions for the production printer. This file is typically enormous (hundreds of megabytes or gigabytes) because it contains detailed information for every ink droplet.
The file is written to a production server connected directly to the printer, eliminating the possibility of file transmission errors or quality degradation.
Step 4: Pre-Production Setup (Day 2)
Before printing begins, the production team prepares materials and equipment.
Media Preparation
For Canvas Prints:
- Canvas rolls are inspected for defects
- The appropriate canvas type (matte, gloss, or standard) for your order is selected and positioned
- Tension is verified to ensure even ink application
For Acrylic Prints:
- Premium archival photo paper is loaded into the printer
- Acrylic sheets are prepared for the bonding process
- Adhesive quality is verified
For Photo Prints:
- The appropriate paper type (gloss, matte, lustre, fiber-based, etc.) is selected and loaded
- Paper is equilibrated to match the production facility's temperature and humidity
- Feed mechanisms are calibrated to the specific paper thickness
Printer Calibration
Before your print begins, the production printer undergoes calibration:
- Color accuracy is verified using color patches
- Ink density is measured and adjusted
- Print head pressure and temperature are optimized for the specific media
- A test pattern is printed and measured to confirm everything is in tolerance
This calibration ensures that the RIP file's instructions translate into accurate color output. Skipping this step saves time but compromises quality. We never skip it.
Quality Control References
A color reference strip is printed alongside your job. This strip contains known colors, allowing our quality control team to verify that your print matches approved standards. It's your guarantee that color accuracy was verified.
Step 5: Production Printing (Day 2-3)
Now the actual printing happens. This is where digital becomes physical.
High-Resolution Printing
JustPix uses professional-grade production printers capable of 1440 DPI (dots per inch) or higher. This resolution is invisible to the human eye—photographic detail appears smooth and continuous rather than dotted or pixelated.
Compare this to consumer printers (600-720 DPI), which are adequate for documents but show visible dot patterns at close viewing distances.
Ink Application
The print head travels across the media, depositing archival pigment-based inks according to the RIP file's instructions. For our largest prints, this process can take 5-10 minutes per print, moving back and forth multiple times to build up color layers.
The precision is remarkable: ink droplets are measured in picoliters (one trillionth of a liter). The printer deposits exactly the right amount of each color ink to achieve color accuracy while maintaining reasonable ink efficiency.
Drying and Curing
Immediately after printing, the print enters a drying zone where controlled heat and airflow begin the curing process. Depending on media type, prints might pass through heated chambers or be left to cure naturally.
Canvas prints cure slowly as ink sets into the fabric weave, creating a permanent bond.
Acrylic prints on photo paper dry quickly; the paper then moves to the adhesive bonding station.
Photo prints cure completely before moving to finishing steps.
Complete curing typically takes 2-4 hours, depending on paper type and environmental conditions. We never rush this—proper curing ensures longevity.
Quality Inspection: First Check
As prints come off the production line, every single one is visually inspected:
- Color accuracy is verified against the approved proof
- Sharpness and detail are examined
- No defects (ink blobs, misalignment, dust specks) are tolerated
- Scratches or surface damage would be caught here
If a print doesn't meet standards, it's set aside for investigation or reprinting. This first-pass inspection catches roughly 1-2% of prints that need attention—a remarkably low defect rate but non-zero because we don't compromise.
Step 6: Finishing and Assembly (Day 2-3)
Printing is complete, but the print isn't finished. Additional steps transform the printed media into a ready-to-hang artwork.
For Canvas Prints
Stretching
- The printed canvas is positioned on kiln-dried wooden stretcher bars
- Special stapling equipment secures the canvas edges to the frame
- Tension is verified to be even and taut
Corner Assembly
- Stretcher corners are reinforced with corner brackets
- A thin wooden frame overlay is sometimes added for a finished look
- The back is inspected to ensure clean, secure stapling
Mounting Hardware
- Picture hooks or sawtooth hangers are attached to the back
- Hardware is positioned precisely at the balance point to ensure level hanging
- Reinforcement ensures the hardware can safely support the print's weight
For Acrylic Prints
Photo Paper Printing
- The image is printed on premium archival photo paper as described above
Adhesive Application
- Precision adhesive is applied to the back of the printed photo paper
- Application is even and complete—no gaps or voids
Acrylic Bonding
- The printed paper is carefully positioned on UV-resistant acrylic
- Rolling or pressing ensures complete adhesion
- The bond cures for 24 hours before further handling
Mounting System
- Specialized mounting hardware (usually float frame hardware) is attached
- Hardware is sized and positioned for secure, level hanging
- Some acrylic prints include spacers that create a floating appearance
Edge Finishing
- Acrylic edges are inspected and sometimes polished for a finished appearance
- Some customers prefer raw edges (modern look); some prefer polished (refined look)
For Photo Prints
Finishing Options
- Standard mounting on foam board or chipboard backing
- Optional matting (colored or white borders around the image)
- Optional frame (museum-quality wood or metal frames)
Quality Check: Second Inspection
- The finished print is inspected for assembly quality
- Mounting is straight and secure
- Hardware is tight and functional
- No damage occurred during finishing
At this point, your print is effectively complete. What follows is final quality verification and packaging.
Step 7: Quality Control and Final Verification (Day 3)
Before any print ships, it passes through comprehensive quality control. This is JustPix's commitment to you.
Color Accuracy Verification
A color reference strip printed with your job is measured using a spectrophotometer—a device that measures reflected light wavelengths with precision.
Your print's colors are compared against the approved color standard. If there's any deviation, we investigate. Most minor variations fall within acceptable tolerance, but significant deviations would trigger reprinting.
Detail and Sharpness Assessment
A portion of your print is examined under magnification:
- Text (if any) is sharp and clear
- Photographic detail shows appropriate sharpness
- Color gradations are smooth without posterization
- No ink artifacts or printing errors are visible
Physical Inspection
The finished print is examined for:
- Defects in the material (scratches, dents, creases)
- Assembly issues (crooked mounting, loose hardware)
- Packaging damage (if any occurred in handling)
- Completeness (all components present, documentation included)
Documentation
For each print, we create a quality report:
- Color readings and comparisons to standard
- Inspection notes
- Any special handling or reprint information
- Customer order details and proof of approval
This documentation travels with your print and is available if you ever have questions.
Step 8: Packaging and Preparation for Shipment (Day 3)
Your print has passed all quality control. Now it's carefully packaged for shipment.
Custom Packaging
For Canvas Prints:
- Canvas is wrapped in protective foam and kraft paper to prevent moisture exposure
- The back is protected with cardboard to prevent damage to the frame
- The package is sized to minimize movement during shipping
- Corners are reinforced to prevent crushing
For Acrylic Prints:
- Acrylic is protected with foam padding on all sides
- A cardboard corner protection is added to prevent point damage
- The package is packed to prevent any movement or shifting
For Photo Prints:
- Prints are placed between cardboard sheets or in rigid mailers
- Foam or bubble wrap cushions the print
- Materials are acid-free and lignin-free (won't degrade the print)
Documentation and Labeling
Your print is labeled with:
- Tracking number for shipment monitoring

The Human Element: Why It Matters
Throughout this process, you'll notice something: human expertise is present at every critical step. Our color team, our production specialists, our quality inspectors—they're not just executing steps. They're making judgment calls, catching subtle issues, and ensuring excellence.
This is why JustPix's prints feel premium. It's not just the quality materials or the archival inks. It's the care taken at every stage.
A fully automated facility might produce slightly lower costs, but it would sacrifice the human expertise that catches and corrects subtle color issues, that verifies sharpness and detail, that ensures packaging protects your print.
We believe the extra care is worth it.
